Meet the Owner
‘My Princess’ magazine caught up with her owner, Michael, long-standing Princess advocate, who shares his yachting story, from circus to charter.

‘I’ve grown up around boats, as a child we travelled around the country with dad’s performing circus with a boat on the trailer to use in the evenings. Then my dad had a powerboat in Tenerife where I realised my love of the water and boating. I was a teenager and I played deckhand for my dad!’, says Michael.
In 2024 his family then bought a Birchwood river boat in the South of France and on passage to Mallorca, they were caught out in a bad storm thanks to the Mistral which was a rude awakening to the reality of boating. Upon finally arriving in Mallorca, his love for Princess Yachts began, when, at the age of 22, berthed in Cala D’Or near the yacht club, a Princess V Class pulled up next to them. ‘That was it’, laughs Michael. ‘I was smitten and I knew straight away that I wanted to buy a Princess one day’.

Michael attended the Southampton Boat Show in 2021 with no intention of buying a boat but he met Joe Hill and within an hour he’d purchased a Princess S66 which he still owns. And during the transaction, Joe showed Michael some renders of the upcoming Princess S72 which he then took delivery of in summer 2024.
Second home meets charter – Princess S72 joins Princess charter fleet
Owning a yacht can be expensive, so Michael decided to charter it out. ‘It just makes financial sense’, advises Michael says. ‘I do actually use the boat quite a lot as I can hop on a plane from Bristol to Palma and be on board in time for lunch, even for a long weekend. But if I can charter it out for a few weeks of the year, the income contributes massively to the overall running costs. It can really stack up with berthing and maintenance, and I have a captain on board most months to keep it in great condition’.

Michael keeps his S72 in Mallorca, largely as he has put down some good roots there since 2003. ‘It’s really geared up towards yachting and the diversity of the three Balearic Islands makes for a fantastic cruising ground in a great climate.’ Michael and his family use it like a second home, ‘the S72 really lends itself to being the perfect Med boat with ample space on the flybridge and in the cockpit, we love the open-plan saloon all on one level, the large opening roof, and the rear window and sliding doors opening out to the aft social space and sun pads. And the interior design and soft furnishings brings a really homely, warm and welcoming feel to the yacht.’

Spontaneity is key for charter guests on board according to Michael, ‘guests often have preconceived ideas and itineraries, but it can be advantageous to go with the flow as the weather can often change the best laid plans. It’s great to have a few things on the wish list but its far more enjoyable to have a chat with the captain on board and make the most of the best weather. We love the west coast up along Soller, it’s a stunning cruising area.’

In terms of advice for yacht owners considering chartering out their beloved floating second home, Michael recommends looking after your yacht. ‘Hire a good captain, I have someone on board every day. I often enjoy driving the boat myself when it’s just my family, but when we are hosting more friends and family, it’s nice to be able to sit back and relax a bit more. When we charter out our yacht, there’s two crew on board and sometimes three if it’s a busy full boat charter with guests who want to use lots of water toys’, says Michael.
So what does the future hold? Loyal Princess owner Michael has ambitions to move up through the range, but for now he enjoys using Negotiator 1 as a second home, both for holidays and working remotely. Palma and Portals are year-round destinations and he’s even just spent his fourth Christmas on board.
